Special visitor

Written by the children of Room 4 on Friday.

This morning we had a special visitor to Room 4. Anna Simcic (Alice's mum) spoke to us about the medals she won at the 1990 and 1994 Commonwealth Games. We looked at her medals and some of us touched them. We looked at her swimming togs and swimming caps with New Zealand written on them.

These are some of the things she talked to us about......

She won gold and silver medals at the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games and a silver medal at the 1994 Victoria (Australia) Games.
When she won the gold medal she swam faster than anyone else.
She was 18 when she competed in the 1990 Commonwealth Games. She was feeling very nervous.
She felt very proud to represent New Zealand.
The swimmers wear very tight togs so no water will get in and slow them down.
Some swimmers wore special togs made of special material that helped the swimmers swim faster. Those togs were later banned.
When she was training she got up at 4.30 in the morning to train five days a week! She worked very very hard.
To be a successful athlete you need to be determined, dedicated, disciplined, and have the desire to win.

Thank you very much Anna for coming to Room 4 and telling us about your experiences at the Commonwealth Games and sharing your medals with us. We loved it!!
